TangoLife Updates + Halloween Practica

TangoLife Updates + Halloween Practica

Dear TangoLovers,

Below are a few important updates for your tango social calendar:

TangoLife Halloween Costume Party at the Practica! Oct 31.
It’s time for a Halloween costume party! Come help us transform the practica into a wildly colorful fantasy evening. POTLUCK finger foods encouraged, cider and treats will accompany our dancing and friendships. We have missed ALL those who have been away for various reasons and hope to make this a little REUNION of Bellingham’s (and our outlying areas!) most interesting tango characters! Paper plates, cups, napkins, cider provided. AND I’ll bring a big bag of hats, capes and other paraphernalia from my magic costume closet for those who are better at practicing minimalism than I am.

The lesson on Halloween is canceled to allow for social time, treats, tricks, etc. Doors open at 6:30 for all you dashing villians, heroes, and princesses. Even non-costumed dancers are MOST WELCOME! We would love a full house!

Two Thursday classes are canceled:

Thursdays October 18 and Oct 25 classes are canceled as Rebecca is out of town. Regular Thursday students are encouraged to attend the classes at the Majestic on Wednesdays, with David Beaumier’s able teaching. He will adjust the class according to the level of students present. Keep your tango mojo going!

New Year’s Eve tickets:

Some have asked about paying for the NYE event without using Paypal. YES! This is fine. Cash, or check is fine, just meet me at any of the other events I normally see you at, or mail it to: Rebecca Niemier, 2610 Likely Ct, Bellingham, WA, 98229. Note that the price goes up at the end of each month. If you are interested in helping with set up and or clean up, let me know! We have already gotten a good reception for the event. 2019 here we come!

TangoLife New Classes + WEDNESDAY Practica

TangoLife New Classes + WEDNESDAY Practica

Dear TangoLovers!

NEW BEGINNININGS: This amazing warm summer is barreling along toward September, which for many, is a time to consider what their Fall/Winter activities will include. Historically, our tango community has welcomed many new dancers to TangoLife’s beginning classes in September and October. This particular new season will coincide with a fresh start in our wonderful new location at the Majestic, downstairs, at 1027 N Forest St, Bellingham.

NEW CLASS “TangoLife Beginning Tango + Practica”: Starting on September 5, the TangoLife program for brand new beginners will switch to WEDNESDAY nights, with beginning class from 6:30-7:30 pm, followed by a two hour open practice time until 9:30 pm. Class is $12 for drop ins, $10 each for a set of four classes. Optional practice time is $5, and student rate is by donation. The entrance to the downstairs level is on E Maple St, and signs will guide you to our new classroom.

NEW FRIENDS: If you are one of the many who have learned “just a bit” about Argentine Tango, and are curious to explore this dance more, I sincerely hope you will join us in September for a 4-class set! Dancing is a celebrated and integral part of so many cultures for very good reasons. Expanding your social circle while simultaneously exercising your body, brain, balance, and listening to compelling music is a recipe for success for everyone. Head into winter with a smile on your face and new friends at your side! Begin any Wednesday in September!

NEW PRACTICA on WEDNESDAYS AND OPEN HOUSE: September is also the time when we begin to see our “alumni” returning to the dance floor, anxious to tune up their steps and technique and catch up with old friends. You alumni know what I mean when I say that our hearts miss you, and truly hope to see you at the NEW location and day of the week for our community practica, downstairs at the MAJESTIC at 1027 N Forest. A special bond forms when people strive together to create something touching and poignant, which is, no doubt, very good for our society right about now! And as many know, this is the essence of my tango mission.

Join us for the open house Wednesday, September 5 at the Majestic, 7:30-9:30 pm, for a mere $5 to help cover the rent. I’ll bring desserts, you bring beverages, David Beaumier will bring music, and we’ll all share some stories! Come be the U in CommUnity!

NEW TUESDAY INTERMEDIATE CLASS? RSVP IF YOU ARE INTERESTED! Beginning September 4, I will have Tuesday evenings open to begin a new intermediate class, for those wishing to refine and smooth out their tango. This is perhaps the most important phase of learning tango. Do not give up unless you have worked out these issues! For leads, we will work on smooth connections between patterns you may know, how to break apart patterns for true spontaneity and musicality, and tuning up posture, shapes and embrace. For follows, we focus on finding the sweet spot within the embrace to accompany your partner without stress, how to add your dance voice to the conversation (leads love this!), embellishments and correct techniques. Perfect material for returning dancers, or those with a few months of tango experience. Do RSVP ASAP so I know if we have enough for a full and balanced class! TangoLife Home Studio, 2610 Likely Ct. 7-8:30 pm. $12 drop in, $10 for a 4-class set.

NEW YOU—PRIVATE LESSONS: Still such a deal! $40/hr or $50 for 1.5 hr, for one student or a couple. All levels. Truly, ALL OF US benefit greatly from private lessons, including your fellow tango community members, as it becomes my task to gently but directly soften any rough edges on your dance technique so that others will be lined up to dance with you! The successful feedback I get from my private lesson students is so very rewarding. I really love diagnosing the “oops” situations so that the student—whether lead or follow—is able to self-correct in the future. And as I have said before, we will often make more improvements in one hour than a month of group lessons. That is….if you practice also! Call me darlings! Schedule a time slot to really move forward. 360-739-0685. Rebecca

Sergio Sottile and Damaris Aveiro dancing in Mendoza, Argentina

Dear TangoLovers,

We hear that each new journey begins with a single step, but perhaps we never truly know where that journey will take us! It still amazes me that TangoLife Milonga has just celebrated its seventh anniversary!! I am so thankful for all of you who continue to foster and feed this milonga, which is made up of thousands of embraces, a million steps, great music, a sweet venue, lots of food, and a clean oak floor. Let’s see where the next 7 years may take us!

The next TangoLife Milonga, on June 4, will include two exciting workshops prior to the milonga. Do watch the enclosed video of Sergio Sottile from Argentina. His clean footwork (check out those two-footed pivots!), and sensitive timing, would make any tanguera swoon! Stay tuned for details. Meanwhile save the date. Our DJ will be Francis Nowaczynski from Vancouver. The cultural theme will be AFRICA!

Classes (below) are on normal schedule. Big thanks to David Beaumier, Krissa Micklewait, and Eric Cole for filling in for me while I was exploring the National Parks in Utah! It was an outstanding, refreshing trip, and I’m glad to be back on the dance floor!

TangoLife Classes + Practica 040417 +

TangoLife Classes + Practica 040417 +

Dear TangoLovers,

What a great way to begin the month of April!  Last night we enjoyed the company of 90 of our favorite dancers at TangoLife Milonga!  Did you know that TangoLife generally includes 30% from Vancouver, 30% from Seattle, and 40% from Whatcom and Skagit counties?  It was quite a treat to also enjoy a dozen or so friends from Pt Townsend in our midst.

On a fairly crowded floor, like it was on Sunday, it becomes IMPERATIVE that all dancers respect the line of dance to avoid injury to yourself, your partner, and to your REPUTATION among your community. Staying in either lane 1 OR lane 2 is a must, and there should be NO ONE dancing between the lanes.  PASSING ON THE RIGHT is especially frowned upon, as this is the blind spot of the lead you are trying to pass.  Opportunistic switching from lane to lane to use space here and there shows a lack of regard for fellow dancers, and a lack of skill to dance in one area for a while until your lane clears.  If you dance tango, you must develop this skill! I would love to see this as a topic at a Practica nearby…  Hmmmm.  How about tomorrow!??

Also, I’m excited that Melissa Patterson is diving in and organizing some tango events here in Bellingham!  Check out her page, and message her if you would like to be on her mailing list. Saturday, April 8 is her inaugural event, with workshops and a milonga with Sara Rose and Albano.  Enjoy!  https://www.facebook.com/laspiernas/

Please note that the Tuesday Lesson and Practica begin 30 minutes later beginning April 4:

TangoLife Classes, Practica 3/27 +

TangoLife Classes, Practica 3/27 +

Dear TangoLovers,

How wonderful it is to see our tango community growing bolder, spreading it’s wings, and investing energy into further development of our tango barrio! So many Bellinghamsters were representing at the Seattle Tango Marathon March 17-19, including some pretty high level workshops with Alicia Pons. Then, last Saturday there was a great turn out at David B’s Ultimo Baile, followed by Sunday in Seattle, where more ‘Hamsters were sighted at La Garua Milonga. This Friday, another team is Seattle-bound for Cachirulo Milonga, a sold-out Encuentro style milonga. One friend said, “We have an embarrassment of tango riches in this area!”

How do we keep track of all these events? In addition to FACEBOOK, which seems to publish breaking tango news FIRST, you may check out allseattletango.com. Or, if you prefer to head north, go to allvancouvertango.com. For Encuentro events, see Siempremilonguero.org.

Staying in town? Don’t forget allbellinghamtango.com. In fact, thanks to Melissa for hosting, there is a pop-up milonga on April 8, with workshops by Seattle’s Sara Rose and her partner Albano, starting at 1 pm. Details on the local website!

And of course, TangoLife Milonga “Silk Road” is this coming Sunday, April 2. I have LOTS of RSVP’s, already, so a great turn out is expected! Info on www.TangoLife.biz and on the allbellighamtango.com website.

Lastly, our TUESDAY TANGO LESSON AND PRACTICA are starting 30 minutes LATER, beginning April 4. This makes it possible for many folks to attend after work without skipping dinner! And David Beaumier and I don’t want ANYONE to miss out! See new times below….

See you at the Practica! Hugs to all!…..Rebecca

TangoLife Classes 03/14/17

TangoLife Classes 03/14/17

DEAR TANGO LOVERS,

Many people ask me if there is really a difference in dancing to a tango, vals or milonga song. My most true answer is “YES, absolutely!” Different types of music resonate through our bodies and connect with our soul/spirit/personality in various ways. Dancing is the outward sign of that connection to the music. As El Flaco Dany said, “The music comes in through my ears and out through my heart.” If I am dancing to reggae, heavy metal, opera, tango or milonga, my personification of the music will definitely look and feel different. Usually everyone in the whole ROOM will be captured by the sentiment within the music.* However, I will most likely CHOOSE steps and an embrace that pair nicely with the tune.

For all these reasons, I am thrilled at how the community is diligently exploring our unit on Milonga. Thank you for the great turn out at the workshops with El Flaco Dany. Tonight’s 6 pm lesson before the practica will continue our review of his material, and then some! Full speed ahead!

*(A skilled DJ understands this, and selects music that fits the skills and the desires of the dancers, watching carefully to keep the mood flowing until last tanda.)

Dear TangoLovers,

True Fact #1 News of the day: Tonight’s Lesson + Practica at Bell Tower is CANCELLED due to snow! Please stay warm and safe at home, and enjoy a little kitchen tango practice on your own.

True Fact #2 News of the day: I am now using MailChimp as my email system for group emails for classes and also TangoLife Milonga. Sometimes these emails get directed to your “junk” box unless you add them as an approved sender. I will send THIS email the OLD way and the NEW way. If you do not see TWO of these in your email box today, then please check your junk box, and add this as an approved sender. (Unless you want to unsubscribe, which will be very easy now.) Next week, I will only send the group email using the new MailChimp program, so don’t get left out in the cold!

Apparently I have brought the snow back with me from Colorado! Thanks to everyone who joined us at TangoLife Bollywood Milonga last Sunday, and braved the beginning flurries of our current white blanket on the way home. I love how everyone got in the spirit of the cultural theme celebrating India, and the wonderful photos by Dwayne Rogge may be viewed here, even if you don’t have Facebook:  (That’s his great pic above!)

Thursday class is on normal schedule, as it looks like plenty of rain will fall by then. We will focus on strategies for dancing at a FESTIVAL, since so many will be attending the Portland Valentango Festival this coming weekend.

Dear TangoLovers,

As many of you know, I am heading to Colorado to ski for 10 days (well, doubtful I will ski EVERY DAY!).  You may be interested to know that my new ski boots and poles are black and red–very tango, you see…

I am so pleased to leave you in the capable hands and dancing feet of David Beaumier, Eric Cole, and a cast of helpers for the practica tonight.  I look forward to seeing you at the Bollywood Milonga on Feb 5, back in my normal tango heels!

ALL COMMUNITY TANGO PRACTICA:

EVERY TUESDAY, Come practice your tango with everyone, or just your favorite partner. Work out those moves and technique you learned in class in our relaxed setting! Exquisite tango music will be pouring up through the Bell Tower, at the purple building where N Garden and Ellis streets intersect. The 1100 SQ FT sprung bamboo floor is wonderful, there’s a great sound system, mirrors that will not lie, and even a ballet bar. Average number of dancers is holding steady at 26-30. Save a landfill and bring a water bottle. Street parking is free.

Practica: 7-9 pm. All levels are welcome. $5 each.

Hosted by Rebecca and the B’ham community

THURSDAYS, INTERMEDIATE CLASS:

Going for it: Working into sustained close embrace, as comfort and ability allow, we polish fundamental patterns everyone should know, with variations and smooth transitions. Intermediate concepts, including the purpose behind sacadas, molinetes, back crosses, embellishments. Emphasis on proficiency and musicality. Getting comfortable with vals and milonga songs. Understanding differences between various tango styles. Digging into the wisdom and surprising dynamics of the milonguero style. Please RSVP for space availability.

Thursdays, Intermediate level, 7-8:30 pm. $10.

TangoLife Studio, 2610 Likely Ct.

Assistant teacher: Eric Cole.

PRIVATE LESSONS with Rebecca:

Still just $40/hour or $50/1.5 hour, for one or two people. (This is part of my investment in growing the community. Most teachers charge $70-100.) Typically we really do accomplish a month of progress in one session, for men or women. Taking one private every 4-6 weeks will keep bad habits in check and progress going forward. I’m available afternoons, some evenings and weekends by appointment.
