TangoLife Classes May 16+

Get set for TangoLife Milonga’s 8th year, and the 12th year of TangoLife classes!!

Sergio Sottile and Damaris Aveiro dancing in Mendoza, Argentina

Dear TangoLovers,

We hear that each new journey begins with a single step, but perhaps we never truly know where that journey will take us! It still amazes me that TangoLife Milonga has just celebrated its seventh anniversary!! I am so thankful for all of you who continue to foster and feed this milonga, which is made up of thousands of embraces, a million steps, great music, a sweet venue, lots of food, and a clean oak floor. Let’s see where the next 7 years may take us!

The next TangoLife Milonga, on June 4, will include two exciting workshops prior to the milonga. Do watch the enclosed video of Sergio Sottile from Argentina. His clean footwork (check out those two-footed pivots!), and sensitive timing, would make any tanguera swoon! Stay tuned for details. Meanwhile save the date. Our DJ will be Francis Nowaczynski from Vancouver. The cultural theme will be AFRICA!

Classes (below) are on normal schedule. Big thanks to David Beaumier, Krissa Micklewait, and Eric Cole for filling in for me while I was exploring the National Parks in Utah! It was an outstanding, refreshing trip, and I’m glad to be back on the dance floor!

TangoLife Classes + Practica 040417 +

TangoLife Classes + Practica 040417 +

Dear TangoLovers,

What a great way to begin the month of April!  Last night we enjoyed the company of 90 of our favorite dancers at TangoLife Milonga!  Did you know that TangoLife generally includes 30% from Vancouver, 30% from Seattle, and 40% from Whatcom and Skagit counties?  It was quite a treat to also enjoy a dozen or so friends from Pt Townsend in our midst.

On a fairly crowded floor, like it was on Sunday, it becomes IMPERATIVE that all dancers respect the line of dance to avoid injury to yourself, your partner, and to your REPUTATION among your community. Staying in either lane 1 OR lane 2 is a must, and there should be NO ONE dancing between the lanes.  PASSING ON THE RIGHT is especially frowned upon, as this is the blind spot of the lead you are trying to pass.  Opportunistic switching from lane to lane to use space here and there shows a lack of regard for fellow dancers, and a lack of skill to dance in one area for a while until your lane clears.  If you dance tango, you must develop this skill! I would love to see this as a topic at a Practica nearby…  Hmmmm.  How about tomorrow!??

Also, I’m excited that Melissa Patterson is diving in and organizing some tango events here in Bellingham!  Check out her page, and message her if you would like to be on her mailing list. Saturday, April 8 is her inaugural event, with workshops and a milonga with Sara Rose and Albano.  Enjoy!  https://www.facebook.com/laspiernas/

Please note that the Tuesday Lesson and Practica begin 30 minutes later beginning April 4:

TangoLife Classes, Practica 3/27 +

Dear TangoLovers,

How wonderful it is to see our tango community growing bolder, spreading it’s wings, and investing energy into further development of our tango barrio! So many Bellinghamsters were representing at the Seattle Tango Marathon March 17-19, including some pretty high level workshops with Alicia Pons. Then, last Saturday there was a great turn out at David B’s Ultimo Baile, followed by Sunday in Seattle, where more ‘Hamsters were sighted at La Garua Milonga. This Friday, another team is Seattle-bound for Cachirulo Milonga, a sold-out Encuentro style milonga. One friend said, “We have an embarrassment of tango riches in this area!”

How do we keep track of all these events? In addition to FACEBOOK, which seems to publish breaking tango news FIRST, you may check out allseattletango.com. Or, if you prefer to head north, go to allvancouvertango.com. For Encuentro events, see Siempremilonguero.org.

Staying in town? Don’t forget allbellinghamtango.com. In fact, thanks to Melissa for hosting, there is a pop-up milonga on April 8, with workshops by Seattle’s Sara Rose and her partner Albano, starting at 1 pm. Details on the local website!

And of course, TangoLife Milonga “Silk Road” is this coming Sunday, April 2. I have LOTS of RSVP’s, already, so a great turn out is expected! Info on www.TangoLife.biz and on the allbellighamtango.com website.

Lastly, our TUESDAY TANGO LESSON AND PRACTICA are starting 30 minutes LATER, beginning April 4. This makes it possible for many folks to attend after work without skipping dinner! And David Beaumier and I don’t want ANYONE to miss out! See new times below….

See you at the Practica! Hugs to all!…..Rebecca

TangoLife Classes 03/14/17

TangoLife Classes 03/14/17

DEAR TANGO LOVERS,

Many people ask me if there is really a difference in dancing to a tango, vals or milonga song. My most true answer is “YES, absolutely!” Different types of music resonate through our bodies and connect with our soul/spirit/personality in various ways. Dancing is the outward sign of that connection to the music. As El Flaco Dany said, “The music comes in through my ears and out through my heart.” If I am dancing to reggae, heavy metal, opera, tango or milonga, my personification of the music will definitely look and feel different. Usually everyone in the whole ROOM will be captured by the sentiment within the music.* However, I will most likely CHOOSE steps and an embrace that pair nicely with the tune.

For all these reasons, I am thrilled at how the community is diligently exploring our unit on Milonga. Thank you for the great turn out at the workshops with El Flaco Dany. Tonight’s 6 pm lesson before the practica will continue our review of his material, and then some! Full speed ahead!

*(A skilled DJ understands this, and selects music that fits the skills and the desires of the dancers, watching carefully to keep the mood flowing until last tanda.)

TangoLife Classes + Practica Feb 7+

Dear TangoLovers,

True Fact #1 News of the day: Tonight’s Lesson + Practica at Bell Tower is CANCELLED due to snow! Please stay warm and safe at home, and enjoy a little kitchen tango practice on your own.

True Fact #2 News of the day: I am now using MailChimp as my email system for group emails for classes and also TangoLife Milonga. Sometimes these emails get directed to your “junk” box unless you add them as an approved sender. I will send THIS email the OLD way and the NEW way. If you do not see TWO of these in your email box today, then please check your junk box, and add this as an approved sender. (Unless you want to unsubscribe, which will be very easy now.) Next week, I will only send the group email using the new MailChimp program, so don’t get left out in the cold!

Apparently I have brought the snow back with me from Colorado! Thanks to everyone who joined us at TangoLife Bollywood Milonga last Sunday, and braved the beginning flurries of our current white blanket on the way home. I love how everyone got in the spirit of the cultural theme celebrating India, and the wonderful photos by Dwayne Rogge may be viewed here, even if you don’t have Facebook:  (That’s his great pic above!)

www.facebook.com/NWTangoPhotos

Thursday class is on normal schedule, as it looks like plenty of rain will fall by then. We will focus on strategies for dancing at a FESTIVAL, since so many will be attending the Portland Valentango Festival this coming weekend.

Dear TangoLovers,

As many of you know, I am heading to Colorado to ski for 10 days (well, doubtful I will ski EVERY DAY!).  You may be interested to know that my new ski boots and poles are black and red–very tango, you see…

I am so pleased to leave you in the capable hands and dancing feet of David Beaumier, Eric Cole, and a cast of helpers for the practica tonight.  I look forward to seeing you at the Bollywood Milonga on Feb 5, back in my normal tango heels!

TangoLife Classes + Practica January 2017

TangoLife Classes + Practica January 2017

Dear TangoLovers,

Here we go, full steam ahead into the new year! Many of our community have been traveling to Seattle and Vancouver to explore tango “out of town” in recent weeks. From my experience, this is a necessary stage of development to fine tune your dancing. And I’m thrilled to hear that our traveling locals are greeted warmly by several of the tango friends they have made while dancing at TangoLife Milonga. The “melting pot” that we have created in Bellingham has truly linked the tango communities in the PNW from Vancouver to Portland. Keep up the great momentum!

To help in this endeavor, there is a change in my teaching schedule: The Wednesday evening group class is canceled, and those students are transferring to the “new and improved” class prior to the Tuesday night Practica, which now runs from 6 – 7 pm (instead of 6:30 pm) beginning January 10. This will give us a full, uninterrupted hour for beginners and early intermediates, time for technique drills, and a broader range of students. The class fee will increase to be in line with other one-hour classes. The Practica-only fee will remain the same.

David Beaumier will still be co-teaching with me, and Victor Flores will join us at times as well. (In fact, Victor will be teaching with me at our kick-off on Jan 10, as David is a guest teacher at the WWU class that night.) On nights where all three of us are present, students benefit from a combined 27 years of tango experience! In addition, Uriah has offered to give a 2 minute briefing on one orchestra and/or composer each week to help us become more familiar with the music. We will follow up by playing a one-tanda sample after announcements. Beware! There may be a pop quiz afterward!

NEXT FOLLOWS TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP: January 18, 6:30-8:30 pm. We had so much fun learning, let’s do it again! See below for details.

LEADERS TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP: This is in the works, so stay tuned for a date and time, leads!

Still just $40/hour or $50/1.5 hour, for one or two people. (This is part of my investment in growing the community. Most teachers charge $70-100.) Typically we really do accomplish a month of progress in one session, for men or women. Taking one private every 4-6 weeks will keep bad habits in check and progress going forward. I’m available afternoons, some evenings and weekends by appointment.

TangoLife End of 2016 classes, non-events, and happy new year!

TangoLife End of 2016 classes, non-events, and happy new year!

Dear TangoLovers,

It was a fitting final Practica of the year on Tuesday, as we all came VERY close together to dance at my home studio after realizing that the Bell Tower Studio had changed locks.  (Their apologies were copious, and extend to us all.)  Thanks to everyone for being adaptable, but moreover, thanks for developing your tango dance to such a nice level that we could all dance in a small space so well!

While many folks are about to celebrate a Happy New Year, I am celebrating all of you, for helping to build a GREAT tango community here in Bellingham!  Hooray for 2016!  My ENORMOUS THANKS TO ERIC C, DAVID B, and VICTOR F for stepping up to teach with me weekly, with such enthusiasm and kindness and AWESOME SKILLS!  You are all great role models of compassion, fortitude and grace, and each of you bring your own unique texture to the community.  Hugs and kisses from us all!

Now for calendar updates:

Bell Tower Practica + Lesson: Will NOT be happening on December 27 nor January 3.  We Resume on Tuesday, January 10.  Please plan to join us for the beginning class and/or Practica!

Wednesday TangoOne Group Class:  Will NOT be meeting December 28 nor January 4.  We will resume on January 11.  This class has room for new dancers, and is a great continuation of the Tuesday beginner class.  Home Studio: 2610 Likely Ct.

Thursday Intermediate+ class:  Will NOT be meeting at 7 pm December 29 nor January 5.  We will resume on January 12 with a new unit I think you will love!

FOLLOWS TECHNIQUE WORKSHOP:  So many have been asking and patiently waiting for this!

Next week, on Dec 29, from 3:30-5:30, all level follows meet at my home studio, 2610 Likely Ct. We will really work on topics like drawing with the free leg, pivots, rulo loco and other saucy embellishments, rolling through the whole foot, floating the rib cage while the legs are VERY busy, and how to cabeceo like you own the place.  At times we will trade lead and follow roles.  One goal I have is to practice enough during class that you have a real head start on developing body memory for these things.  The two hour workshop is $15. Optional dinner out afterwards somewhere yummy, and any leads may join us then!  RSVP please, for workshop and/or dinner.  (I am happy to schedule a similar evening workshop on a Monday in January.  LMK if interested.)

TANGOLIFE MILONGA:  IS CANCELED FOR JANUARY 1!  It is a NON-EVENT! Please mark your brand new calendars for February 5, 6:30-10:30 pm, when we resume our First Sunday of the Month pattern.  The February theme is “Bollywood”, so have fun with that one!  I may need to buy more eyeliner.

That’s it for now.  Have a great “holiday of your choice”, and get set for a spectacular New Year!
Abrazos, Rebecca

TangoLife Classes + Practica December 6+

TangoLife Classes + Practica December 6+

Dear Tango Lovers,

My heart runneth over with joy at the stellar attendance and boisterous atmosphere you all brought to TangoLife Milonga last Sunday!  We had visitors from San Francisco and Istanbul, as well as so many of our PNW regulars.  So nice to have a safe place to “let our lights shine.”  I know, corny.  But true.  I doubt I’d wear a dress with lights to many other milongas!

TONIGHT’S BELLTOWER PRACTICA IS ON!  There is no snow forecasted.  Although it will be very COLD so check your antifreeze and bring your window scrapers!  We will warm up the dance floor quickly!

We are designating the BellTower Practica on December 13 as an end-of-year PARTY for the whole community. There will NOT be a lesson that night, so we can chat and snack from 6:30-7:45 or so, prior to putting on some very danceable music until 9 pm.  Did I say snacks?  Yes, please bring either a finger-food type appetizer or dessert, or a beverage, to share.  We will have tables, napkins, cups.

December’s teaching schedule will seem like a school break:  I will be taking THREE week’s off of teaching group classes, from December 16 to January 10.  However, I do have open day times for private lessons during that three weeks. Explore some of that Kitchen Tango during the break.

Tango BeginnersPlus:  OPEN CLASS, MSG REBECCA TO REGISTER

TangoLife Studio, 2610 Likely Ct.

For “just beyond brand new beginning-ish” tango students. Learn fundamental tango techniques which allow partners to dance as one, without pushing or pulling. By remaining balanced in our own axis, we avoid any heavy feel to our partners, while maintaining a very cozy embrace and much more freedom of movement. We scroll through basic steps: walking, ochos, turns, parallel and cross system, while continually improving our balance and connection. Clear instruction on bridging into close embrace, allowing free movement and discovering the important “spiral in the body.” Social dance etiquette, including navigation, cabeceo (inviting/accepting dances), etc, are taught and practiced to ensure success at milongas. Please RSVP for space availability.  Assistant teacher: Victor Flores.

THURSDAYS, 7-8:30 pm. $10. Intermediate: DEC 1, 8, 15 ONLY.

TangoLife Studio, 2610 Likely Ct.

Going for it: Working into sustained close embrace, as comfort and ability allow, we polish fundamental patterns everyone should know, with variations and smooth transitions. Intermediate concepts, including the purpose behind sacadas, molinetes, back crosses, embellishments. Emphasis on proficiency and musicality. Getting comfortable with vals and milonga songs. Understanding differences between various tango styles. Digging into the wisdom and surprising dynamics of the milonguero style. Please RSVP for space availability. Assistant teacher: Eric Cole.
