TangoLife Events: Tapas, Taps & TANGO: Reunion/Welcome!

Dear TangoLovers,

Happy 2019 to all of you “touched by tango” in one way or another.  Whether you USED to tango, CURRENTLY tango, or HOPE to get into the tango groove, we have events for you this year!   Please, please read, and come to the welcome/reunion!

I submit at the very bottom of this email some great New Year’s Eve photos by Dwayne Rogge, and a video compilation by Chris Hazenburg, to ENLIVEN your desire for those SENSATIONS that tango encompasses, which no other activity or community can quite fulfill.

In tango we feel challenged, rewarded, appreciated, humbled, respected, frustrated, elated, loved. We socialize, we strive, we achieve. Sometimes we fail, but softly, and in a safe place, usually accompanied with laughter! We improve posture, breathing and fitness.  We improve our socializing, we improve our listening, we encourage, we thrill when others improve.  We network. We challenge our memory consistently.

Just by showing up we move the tango community forward.  Perhaps humanity as well. Meanwhile we are bathed in sumptuous tango music, opening up possibilities in our creative realms which only the rhythms of dancing can deliver.  And we are always on the lookout for GREAT PLACES TO TANGO!  For instance:

Tapas, Taps, and Tango
The first NEW SPECIAL EVENT for TangoLife this year is one I sincerely hope you will ALL attend.  It is both a REUNION and a WELCOME to new folks who might need the MAGIC OF TANGO in their lives this year.

In classic Bellingham style, the new Beer Garden at Twin Sisters Brewery is hosting Tapas, Taps, and Tango, beginning Tuesday, January 22, from 4-6+ pm.  The floor is very smooth (shiny!) concrete.  DJ Rod McCrae from Vancouver has been hand selected to start us off with his “nuevo traditional” playlist with a Spanish flair to compliment the Tapas theme and appeal to newer dancers.  Details are in the description below.  Please note that the WELCOME TO TANGO (read Tango Community Outreach!) portion is centered on the lesson at 5-5:30, and our community needs some experienced dancers to schmooze with patrons, and attend the class as ambassadors with new (perhaps bashful) folks.

The REUNION portion of the event will begin whenever YOU arrive and get plastered with hugs from friends old and new.  Open dancing (and catching up!) begins at 4 pm, and although the happy hour pricing finishes up at 6 pm, I truly hope many of our “historical characters” can order early and stay longer to chat, sharing memories of our past tango lives, and future plans, whatever they might be.   If you were part of the crowd back in the days of the Pure Bliss “mini” milongas, then I surely hope to see you on January 22!  If you are part of the current TangoLife Tribe, then be there or be square!

Tuesday is Tapas, Taps, and Tango Happy Hour!
Warm up your winter with specialty Tapas appetizers, our finest brews on tap, and Argentine Tango dancing!
Bellingham’s TangoLife dancing community will join us for a bit of fun and indoor adventure on Tuesday January 22 from 4-6 pm. Check out their moves, then hop in on the FREE Intro to Tango lesson 5-5:30! Try something new…it’s good for what “ales” you!
Tango Instructor Rebecca Niemier has been teaching tango weekly since 2005, and has never met a person who actually has two left feet. If you can walk, you can tango! www.TangoLife.biz

But wait, there’s more!…
A practical approach to PRACTICA!

Whether you are new or rather experienced with tango, we all come to realize that consistent practice is necessary to learn, develop, and improve and get comfortable in our dance. So thank goodness for WEDNESDAY PRACTICAS at the Majestic! Many communities PINE for such a glorious space to come together, refine their moves, make carpool plans, share life adventures, trade shoes, and support the rental fees with their Entrada.  I would like to propose a challenge that “Each one Bring one” new person per month to the beginning lesson/practica, so that we can continue to keep this valuable resource going.  Perhaps you have untapped friends at work, or neighbors who just need a fresh encouragement to come see what tango is like.  Perhaps you might share a TangoLife Facebook post to your wall about the Practica/lesson, or the new Tapas, Taps and Tango event at Twin Sisters Brewery.  Perhaps you take a new dancer under your wing and coach them along.  Indeed, it takes a village to keep our tango community going and GROWING!  Be the U in CommUnity and help spread the word!

TangoLife Milonga
And lastly, (for now at least), the next TangoLife Milonga is Sunday, February 3.  There will be a guest teacher Daniel Lapadula from Buenos Aires offering a class 5:15-6:30 for $15.  He teaches concepts for the social dance floor, and the lesson will most likely be on Milonga.  Michell Badion of Seattle will be partnering with him, so it is sure to be a fun time!   Our DJ is the fabulous ROBERT HAUK of Portland, so hang on to your socks, it’s gonna be a great night!  Now your next question is “what is the theme?”  Well,  I HAVEN’T DECIDED YET!!  I’m sure once I hit “send” on this email, an inspiration will come to me.  So keep an eye out for the next TangoLife Email!

Wishing you all heartfelt, cozy embraces in 2019! ….Rebecca

TangoLife Milonga + Two Workshops with Sergio Sottile on Sunday

Rebecca’s TangoLife Milonga

Cultural theme: AFRICA!

SUNDAY, JUNE 4, 2017

Bellingham, WA

Milonga 6:30 – 10:30 pm.

New Entrada $15 / $5 college students

DJ Francis Nowaczynski of Vancouver

PLUS TWO WORKSHOPS BY
SERGIO SOTTILE OF MENDOZA, ARGENTINA
AT 4 PM AND 5:15 PM
**(DETAILS BELOW)**

This year TangoLife is celebrating the world’s beautiful cultural diversity through the monthly themes. Continue the tour with us!

Got rhythm? Really deep down in your bones rhythm? With the ENTIRE CONTINENT of AFRICA as the theme of the month, perhaps it is the pulsing drum beats, combined with the glorious textiles and exotic animals, that compel our imaginations to travel to these distant lands. Not to mention, the beautiful, uninhibited sense of freedom within African dancing. There is so much we can learn from AFRICA!

And, there is a bit of help that we can give to Africa. Did you know that there are growing tango communities there? Tango classes, live music, and milongas are blossoming. But there’s almost no access to tango shoes. Doris Bartha of Seattle is coordinating TANGO SHOES FOR AFRICA, and will be at TangoLife accepting donations of used (or new!) women’s and men’s tango shoes. They will be sent to South Africa, Mozambique, Malawi, Nigeria and beyond, to spread tango love across the African continent. Check your closets, and bring any shoes needing a new adventure to TangoLife on June 4th! More info: doris.bartha@gmail.com.

But wait, there’s MORE! Two WORKSHOPS will precede TangoLife Milonga, taught by SERGIO SOTTILE of Argentina, at 4 pm and 5:15 pm. This marks the beginning of his two month tour in the US. See below for class details, and join us for some very useful techniques to create an elegant dance on a busy dance floor.

……………………………………….
Rebecca’s TangoLife Presents:
Workshops with Sergio Sottile of Mendoza, Argentina
and Carmen Elisa Valencia of Seattle, USA

Sergio Sottile recently received second place in the Buenos Aires World Championships in Mendoza, Argentina. He has been teaching tango for 25 years, and competing regularly, including several other acclaimed titles. Carmen Elisa recently competed in San Francisco, and was among the finalists for the USA. Above all, this pair is focused on the social side of tango, with elegance, simplicity, connection, and musicality at the core of their dance. For many dancers, this is the root of tango!

Speaking of roots, I have had the pleasure of dancing in Mendoza, and was thrilled to learn of the revival of Tango Folklorico there, with abundant classes to enrich the local dancing community. Be sure to chat with Sergio about this!

Two workshops are offered prior to TangoLife Milonga in Bellingham. Please join us for an authentic approach to this alluring dance:

HOW TO CREATE A PLEASANT DANCE IN THE MILONGA

using good technique and musicality:

Workshop 1: A lovely turn to the right 4 pm – 5:15 pm.

Workshop 2: A connecting step, then a turn to the left 5:15 pm – 6:30 pm.

Pre-requisite: 6 months of regular lessons and dancing.

One class: $20. Two class: $15 each. Pay at the door. No reservation needed.

All at the Majestic Ballroom, 1027 N Forest St. Bellingham.

Watch for Sergio’s clean two-footed pivots and attention to his partner in the enclosed video. Then make plans to arrive early for workshops prior to TangoLife Milonga!

TangoLife Classes May 16+

Get set for TangoLife Milonga’s 8th year, and the 12th year of TangoLife classes!!

Sergio Sottile and Damaris Aveiro dancing in Mendoza, Argentina

Dear TangoLovers,

We hear that each new journey begins with a single step, but perhaps we never truly know where that journey will take us! It still amazes me that TangoLife Milonga has just celebrated its seventh anniversary!! I am so thankful for all of you who continue to foster and feed this milonga, which is made up of thousands of embraces, a million steps, great music, a sweet venue, lots of food, and a clean oak floor. Let’s see where the next 7 years may take us!

The next TangoLife Milonga, on June 4, will include two exciting workshops prior to the milonga. Do watch the enclosed video of Sergio Sottile from Argentina. His clean footwork (check out those two-footed pivots!), and sensitive timing, would make any tanguera swoon! Stay tuned for details. Meanwhile save the date. Our DJ will be Francis Nowaczynski from Vancouver. The cultural theme will be AFRICA!

Classes (below) are on normal schedule. Big thanks to David Beaumier, Krissa Micklewait, and Eric Cole for filling in for me while I was exploring the National Parks in Utah! It was an outstanding, refreshing trip, and I’m glad to be back on the dance floor!

PRIVATE LESSONS with Rebecca:

Still just $40/hour or $50/1.5 hour, for one or two people. (This is part of my investment in growing the community. Most teachers charge $70-100.) Typically we really do accomplish a month of progress in one session, for men or women. Taking one private every 4-6 weeks will keep bad habits in check and progress going forward. I’m available afternoons, some evenings and weekends by appointment.

TangoLife Milonga plus Robert Hauk Workshops – Halloween Weekend

Rebecca’s TangoLife Milonga

Ode to Buenos Aires”

A TWO DAY EVENT, HALLOWEEN WEEKEND!

SATURDAY, OCT 31 and SUNDAY, NOV 1, 2015

Join us as we dance our way through tango history, with two workshops each afternoon, taught by Robert Hauk of Portland with Rebecca Niemier. Classes focus on the Legendary Maestros who laid the foundations of what tango is today. Robert has been dancing tango a mere 20 years, teaching for 17 years, a top DJ, and a key player in the development of the Portland tango scene from its beginnings. (Videos and website below.)

In addition to workshops, the double-header weekend features:

**EL ULTIMO BAILE MILONGA on Saturday night (Halloween), and

**REBECCA’S TANGOLIFE MILONGA on Sunday night

Bellingham Halloween Weekend Schedule:

SATURDAY WORKSHOPS at the Majestic (downstairs), 1027 N Forest St, Bellingham

Important foundations for beginners and those new to milonguero concepts.

A: 2-3:15 pm. Walking and Corridas. The embrace and walking are fundamental to milonguero style. Moving freely and comfortably in close embrace opens up a world of feeling and musical expression. From a smooth walk, we’ll work with the quick walk steps called Corridas. Nice fun steps to add a bit of spice. We will build on these Corridas through the weekend.

B: 3:30-4:45 pm. Check steps and Ocho Cortado. This most pleasing combination of 2 quick check steps is a must-learn for anyone interested in milonguero style. It is easy to make many variations, and we will explore some favorites of the Maestros of tango. A very satisfying step when the timing is right with the music and partners are in sync.

SATURDAY MILONGA,

EL ULTIMO BAILE

Halloween, Oct 31, 9 pm-midnight. $6.

La Vida Dance Studio, 1417 Cornwall Ave (upstairs), Bellingham.

A cozy, costume-friendly milonga. Host/DJ David Beaumier.

See Facebook Event here.

SUNDAY WORKSHOPS held at Majestic Ballroom (upstairs), 1027 N Forest St, Bellingham.

Create a lively dance—learn to lead without pushing, and to follow instinctively.

C: 2-3:15 pm. Continued Quick Time. Here we explore steps where one or both partners are moving in double time. Fun movements with a distinctive musicality. Think Ricardo Vidort and Osvaldo Cartery.

D. 3:30-5:45 pm. Circular Movements. Robert’s biggest inspiration, from the older milongueros he knew, is from Tete Rusconi. Tete is well known for his may unique steps. Here we develop a turn combination with enrosque, which recalls Tete’s ingenious dance.

Workshop prices: $20 each for your 1st and 2nd. $15 each for your 3rd and 4th. Students: ½ off.

PRIVATE LESSONS: Sat or Sun before 2 pm: $60/hr. Rebecca’s studio. Call to schedule.

REGISTER PLEASE ASAP to help balance: Rebzebb@msn.com, or 360-739-0685.
