TangoLife Classes, Updated Nov. Schedule

Dear TangoLovers,

And on the 8th day, I rested much of Monday, napping and musing about the adventure-filled weekend with Robert Hauk’s workshops, our double-header milonga weekend, and all the spirit everyone gave toward learning the material in the workshops and private lessons. Thanks to all who could participate! We will continue to work on the ideas of the weekend in classes and at the Practica*, and share with those who could not attend.

Please note the schedule changes below! Particularly, the Wednesday classes have been eliminated to create stronger attendance in both the Tuesday and Thursday classes through the winter months. I’m so glad it worked out for everyone’s schedule.

Holiday cancellations: There will be no group classes Thanksgiving week (Nov 23-27) nor the Christmas/New Year’s two weeks (Dec 21-Jan 1). That leaves us 3 good weeks in November and December, so we will be busy dancers!

*Sunday Practica: I will be at this next Practica, Nov 8, at 6:30 sharp, and will offer a review of some of our recent studies with Robert Hauk until 7:15, for anyone interested. I’ll be available till closing time at 9 pm for bits of coaching on request. I am happy to donate my time to this. I would be even more happy if anyone might like to donate some funds to help me send more needed supplies to the refugees in Lesvos, Greece. A tango friend of mine, Nicola Aime, has returned from her volunteer post there on the beach, and knows first hand of the desperation. We have the address of the distribution warehouse in Lesvos, and a supplier that can send clothing, tents, blankets, etc, to help them cope through the onset of the winter months. Last night I sent tents and sleeping bags. I will have a donation jar at the Practica, and hope to see many of you there this Sunday, whether you are dancing or not. Let’s make it a thanks-GIVING of sorts.  (Of course, you may wish to send items directly to the address below in Lesvos.)

Hugs to all, Rebecca

TangoLife Classes, November, 2015

Classes and private lessons are held at Rebecca’s home studio unless otherwise noted. (2610 Likely Ct. Park on street, walk down outdoor stairs on right side of house to lower entrance.) Below are summaries of what we cover in each class:

Tuesdays, 7:30-9 pm. $10. Tango OnePointFive:

For new-ish tango students ready for more fun.* Learn fundamental tango techniques which allow partners to dance as one, without pushing or pulling. By remaining balanced in our own axis, we avoid any heavy feel to our partners, while maintaining a very cozy embrace and much more freedom of movement. We scroll through basic steps: walking, ochos, turns, parallel and cross system, while continually improving our balance and connection. Clear instruction on bridging into close embrace, allowing free movement and discovering the important “spiral in the body.” Important social dance etiquette, including navigation, cabeceo (inviting/accepting dances), etc, are taught and practiced to ensure success at milongas. Please RSVP for space availability.

*Brand new students please contact Rebecca for personal “Intro to Tango” lessons.

Thursdays, 7-8:30 pm. $10. Intermediate:

Working into sustained close embrace, as comfort and ability allow, we polish fundamental patterns everyone should know, with variations and smooth transitions. Intermediate concepts, including the purpose behind sacadas, molinetes, back crosses, embellishments. Emphasis on proficiency and musicality. Getting comfortable with vals and milonga songs. Understanding differences between various tango styles. Digging into the wisdom and surprising dynamics of the milonguero style. Please RSVP for space availability.

Sundays, 6:30-9 pm. $5. ALL COMMUNITY PRACTICA:

Bellingham Dance Co, 1705 N State St, B’ham.

Drop in practice time for ALL LEVELS of tango dancers. Plenty of music, space, mirrors and tango friends working out the details of whatever they recall from class. Great chance to meet the rest of the gang, get feedback, help each other grow and have more than a few laughs. Dance a bit with everyone, or just one partner, whatever you wish. (PRACTICA DOES NOT MEET FIRST SUNDAY OF THE MONTH DUE TO TANGOLIFE MILONGA.)

Private lessons with Rebecca:

Still just $40/hour or $50/1.5 hour, for one or two people. (This is part of my investment in growing the community. Most teachers charge $70-90.) Typically we really do accomplish a month of progress in one session, for men or women. Taking one private every 4-6 weeks will keep bad habits in check and progress going forward. I’m available afternoons, some evenings and weekends by appointment.

*Brand new students: *Please contact Rebecca for personal “Intro to Tango” lessons to bring you quickly up to speed prior to group classes. 360-739-0685, Rebzebb@msn.com.
