TangoLife Milonga+ Robert Hauk workshops

Rebecca’s TangoLife Milonga

INTERdependence Days

With Robert Hauk of Portland

Workshops, practicas, Saturday group dinner, Sunday TangoLife Milonga

SATURDAY, July 2 and SUNDAY, July 3, 2016

Tango is a virtual hotbed of INTERdependence, and this weekend we celebrate the various ways we exercise our mutual reliance. How often have we helped the balance or musicality of our partner? Or been “saved” by a quick adjustment of someone clever? Or encouraged a DJ, host or newcomer? Or paused and winked before entering the dance floor? How refreshing it is when we all want to do well for each other. Manners matter in an interdependent world!

Robert Hauk of Portland will present four workshops along with Rebecca Niemier, offering techniques and sequences which enhance both partners’ reliability and mutual presence. They are ideal for close embrace dancing at Encuentros and remaining musical within small spaces at any venue. Robert has been dancing tango over 20 years, teaching for 18 years, hosted a milonga for 15 years, a festival-level DJ, and a key player in the development of the Portland tango scene from its beginnings. He’s definitely learned a few things along the way, and has much to share with our community!

Weekend Schedule, July 2 & 3:

Class levels increase in complexity through the weekend.

Bell Tower Studios, 1430 N Garden St, Bellingham (Building is purple)

A: 4-5:15 pm. Walking and Check Step Turns:

The embrace and walking are fundamental to any tango style. Discover how moving freely and comfortably in close embrace opens up a world of feeling and musical expression. In addition we will develop a group of check step turns that are great for dancing on more crowded dance floors. For all levels.

B: 5:30-6:45 pm. Walking in Crossed Feet:

Walking in crossed feet is one of the unusual and signature movements in Argentine tango, the most familiar crossed feet movement is the back ocho. Many interesting options are opened up in the dance through the transitions to and from crossed feet. This class will develop the foundations of walking in crossed feet and will explore turning transitions to and from crossed feet.

6:45-7:30 pm. Practica

Mambo Italiano, 1303 12 St, Fairhaven (South side of Bellingham)

Dinner and a bit of dancing around the fountain in the courtyard!

RSVP to Rebecca* for your reservations. 7:30-10:30 pm

Majestic Ballroom, 1027 N Forest St, Bellingham

C: 3-4:15 pm. Walking and Turning:

In this class we will start from a not so simple walking exercise and see how we can make new movements simply by playing with timing, adding quick timing in different places. This work will emphasize the need to use body torsion when walking outside of frame, and how one develops new movements from old ones.

D. 4:30-5:45 pm. Turns and Combinations:

Using situations explored in the previous class we will develop some interesting and challenging combinations for the dance floor. In these combinations we will explore how one step can be combined with many others giving numerous possibilities.
